Treasure can be found by following tattered maps. Treasure value is determined by the material tier of the chest. Chest can be uncovered by digging / fishing within a 4 tile range and will always spawn at the tile in front of the player. Water chests can also be retrieved by set down layer until it is above water and then dig it. Uncovering a chest spawns guards in a fair distance. At night with torches you might even unintentionally run away from some guards. Opening a treasure chest spawns another wave of guards. Guards are regular creatures, determined by the tile, that they spawn on - so you will have many ghosts if you find one in a valley. Or sharks if on the coast. Chests are all locked. You either need lockpicking and a lockpick or brute force it open. Latter destroys the chest and drops its contents in an 3x3 area of the chest. Brute forcing a chest counts as attacking an enemy for training and reputation.

Found chests will automatically be checked off on tattered maps. If all chests are found, that tattered map becomes a "completed tattered map".
