Quick Tips[]
Just as in real life, it's helpful to keep in mind the ranking of survival needs.
- Drinkable Water
- Food
- Shelter/Tools/Weapons/Armor
A sharpened item used to carve things, a way to generate water, a fire, and a stone version of each tool are some good early game goals.
A branch can be used to mine, chop trees, and do several other gathering actions at the beginning of the game until you build stone tools. Also if you put a branch or item into your quickslots and right click on it you can see the list of all the actions you can use it for and select which one is the default (for example change it from "stoke fire" to "gather" on a branch) by clicking the small X next to the name of the action on the list.
Many items in the game need to be disassembled to be of any worth or for further uses. A branch is useful for a few things but just as often you need to disassemble it into a pole (plus leaves, stripped bark, and twigs) to get the items you need for other recipes. If you're not sure what to do with an item, try disassembling it.
Almost everything you do produces malignity in this game so try to limit what you do unless you need to. There's no point mining out a 20x30 area for a base when there's already an area like that nearby that you can turn into a base with a couple of walls. Don't waste your time mining rocks only unless you have no other choice, you'll get plenty of rocks when you mine tin/copper/talc/etc.
Exploring pays off! Rather than trying to produce your own food and water at the beginning of the game you can find many sources of food and pools of fresh water just by looking around.
See a monster? Don't be afraid to run away until you've got decent gear and healing.
And while it is up to each person how they want to play the game, I found the game a LOT more enjoyable and less stressful by adding on the developer tools mod and drastically increasing my weight carrying capacity. If some element of the game is making the game a chore instead of fun, consider just changing it. However you enjoy the game is the correct way to play it.
